As he tries to hang on to his career, Jered Weaver reached a new low Friday night.
Weaver gave up four homers in the Angels’ 7-0 loss to the New York Yankees, bringing his season total to 30 for the first time in his career.
Weaver’s previous worst was 27, and he matched that on the first batter of the game, when Jacoby Ellsbury hit one into the right-field seats.
The Yankees had just a 2-0 lead before Weaver gave up three solo homers in the fifth, to Ronald Torreyes, Didi Gregorius and Gary Sanchez.
That was all for the fourth game in Weaver’s career in which he had allowed four homers, the first since April 6, 2014.
The performance lifted his ERA to 5.47, well above last year’s 4.64 mark that was his previous career worst.
The 33-year-old Weaver said after his last outing, on Sunday in Cleveland, that he was thinking this could be his final season.
