CINCINNATI >> Given the instability in their starting rotation and the health issues that have plagued that group this season, the Dodgers expecting Brett Anderson to retu from back surgery and morph into a workhorse was akin to buying exercise equipment from an infomercial. Disappointment was almost inevitable.
Anderson couldn’t make it through four innings without another injury in his second start of the season. Things weren’t going very well before he left either as the Cincinnati Reds pounded the Dodgers 11-1 Saturday night in a game interrupted for over an hour by rain.
The Dodgers were outhit 18-3 in the loss, their third in a row. It is their first three-game losing streak since July 5-7 and they have been outscored 25-7 during this one. But the San Francisco Giants also lost Saturday, leaving the Dodgers just a half-game out of first place in the NL West.

DEL MAR >> Remember when some were calling Califoia Chrome a weak Kentucky Derby winner in 2014? Some in Louisville cringed the day he won the country’s most famous horse race. He wasn’t a mile and a quarter horse, they claimed beforehand.
Wonder what those same folks are saying today after Califoia Chrome toyed with arguably the toughest Pacific Classic field in the Del Mar race’s 26 runnings Saturday, demolishing a field that included three-time Eclipse Award winner Beholder and the highly respected Dortmund.
Final tally? Califoia Chrome by five lengths under a perfect ride by Victor Espinoza, who guided the 5-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit to a gate-to-wire victory through fractions of 23.20, 47.29, 1:11.22 and 1:35.69. Final time for the 1 1/4 miles was 2:00.13, but it could have been faster if Espinoza hadn’t taken a long hold late.

ANAHEIM>> Garret Anderson knocked the dust of his 2002 World Series championship ring Saturday moing.
The Angels all-time leader in seven offensive categories called it the only tangible thing from his 20-year baseball career. He wore it when he became the 14th individual inducted into the Angels Hall of Fame in a pregame ceremony on Saturday, where Angels owner Arte Moreno presented Anderson with a couple more tangible reminders of his lofty place in Angels history, a Hall of Fame ring and a bright red jacket.
“Even watching video (of my career), it still doesn’t feel real to me,” Anderson said before the ceremony. “I can drive by the stadium taking my kids somewhere and it still feels like I honestly didn’t play there. I wish I could hold onto something to let me know it was real. Even though I played 20 years of pro ball, snap, it was gone.”

ANAHEIM >> A day after Angels owner Arte Moreno cited a lack of pitching in defense of manager Mike Scioscia’s role in the team’s dip 20 games below .500, Ricky Nolasco didn’t debunk the argument.
The trade deadline acquisition, who Moreno owes $12 million next year, dropped his third game in four starts in an Angels uniform, surrendering an early lead to the Yankees in a 5-1 loss on Saturday at Angel Stadium.
Entering Saturday, Angels starters had a collective 5.04 ERA, the fourth worst in the major leagues.
Nolasco gave up five runs in six innings, swelling his ERA to 5.22 on the season, but allowed all seven of his hits with two outs.
“I thought I was pretty good, just couldn’t finish two guys off with two outs,” Nolasco said. “That was the whole game.”

LA QUINTA >> The oldest living Ram is Jim Hardy. He’s been too busy living to notice.
Every week Hardy drives two hours to watch USC practice. He quarterbacked two Rose Bowl victories for the Trojans, in 1944 and 1945. He and his wife Henrietta, whom he calls Hank, don’t miss USC home games either.
He is 93. He drives, without glasses. He takes not one single pill. “My blood pressure is real low,” he said.
He can sit in his handsome house at the La Quinta Golf Estates, and pull up obscure names from more than 60 years ago, as he did Wednesday. As the former general manager of the Coliseum Commission, he’s glad the Rams are back there.
And he seems determined to stick around until USC wins another national championship.
“I guess it’s sad that a guy my age hasn’t gotten over being a freshman,” Hardy said.

Los Angeles Rams season ticket holder Jamaal Artis crawled down the 110 Freeway, inched for what seemed like an eteity on side streets toward Exposition Park, then drew a breath upon seeing the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum — billed as “the greatest stadium in the world.”

The enthusiasm in Mike Hopkins’ voice sounded clear as he spoke into the phone.
He just finished another practice as a court coach for the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team, leaving him inspired about working with some of the NBA’s best players. That did not mark the only thing that made Hopkins feel excited, though.
He expressed appreciation for being a Syracuse assistant under Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim for the last 21 years. He sounded optimistic about remaining the expected head coach in waiting.
Hopkins laughed as he charted his own jouey from a Syracuse benchwarmer to captain. He reflected with nostalgia on playing for his alma mater, Santa Ana Mater Dei, which he considered “one of the greatest high schools on the planet.”
All of those moments featured a common thread that explained Hopkins’ endless trajectory despite encountering endless obstacles.

Poor ticket sales have compounded existing financial challenges in recession-battered Brazil that have already hit operations at the Rio Olympics, which close Sunday.
Rio has less than three weeks to prepare for Paralympics, the pinnacle of the disability sport calendar where organizers hoped to build on progress made at the well-attended games in London four years ago. But Rio organizers have reported sales of just over 290,000 tickets for the Sept. 7-18 Paralympics.

RIO DE JANEIRO >> Geno Auriemma and Diana Taurasi shared a long, emotional embrace. Mission accomplished.
The U.S. women’s basketball team won a sixth consecutive Olympic gold medal in dominant fashion, routing Spain 101-72 on Saturday. Taurasi, who is originally from Chino, and the Americans played nearly flawless basketball in Rio, and were never challenged. They have won 49 consecutive games in the Olympics with only one of those decided by single digits.
With that kind of sustained success, no one wants to say this is the best women’s basketball team ever assembled. They won by nearly 40 points a game, but fell short of the record 102.4 points the 1996 team averaged.
But if they aren’t the best ever, they’re close. There never really was any doubt that the U.S. would win the gold in Rio. The only question was by how much.

ANAHEIM >> Arte Moreno has no illusions about what has gone wrong, and what could have been done, to keep his team from this miserable season.
“It’s pretty hard to win when you have no pitching,” the Angels owner said Friday, referring to the spate of injuries that shattered the club’s pitching staff.
While there are some cries from frustrated fans that the Angels need an organizational shakeup — starting with the end of Mike Scioscia’s 17-year run as the manager — Moreno shrugged it off.
“I don’t care who you put on the coaching staff,” he said, “if you don’t have any pitching, it’s pretty hard to win.”
Moreno addressed the team’s disappointing season, how they got here and how they can tu things around, in an interview with the Southe Califoia News Group. It was his the first interview since early in spring training for the Angels owner.

As he tries to hang on to his career, Jered Weaver reached a new low Friday night.
Weaver gave up four homers in the Angels’ 7-0 loss to the New York Yankees, bringing his season total to 30 for the first time in his career.
Weaver’s previous worst was 27, and he matched that on the first batter of the game, when Jacoby Ellsbury hit one into the right-field seats.
The Yankees had just a 2-0 lead before Weaver gave up three solo homers in the fifth, to Ronald Torreyes, Didi Gregorius and Gary Sanchez.
That was all for the fourth game in Weaver’s career in which he had allowed four homers, the first since April 6, 2014.
The performance lifted his ERA to 5.47, well above last year’s 4.64 mark that was his previous career worst.
The 33-year-old Weaver said after his last outing, on Sunday in Cleveland, that he was thinking this could be his final season.

Right-hander Bud Norris was activated from the DL on Friday after missing 2 1/2 weeks with a strained muscle in his back. The Cincinnati Reds were certainly happy to see him back on a pitcher’s mound. They pounded him for six runs in less than four innings on the way to a 9-2 victory over the Dodgers at Great American Ball Park.
The Dodgers have lost back-to-back games for only the second time in the past two weeks and could fall out of first place depending on the outcome of the San Francisco Giants’ late game against the New York Mets on Friday. Bring on the welterweight rematch between Nate Diaz and featherweight champion Conor McGregor.
The heated rivals will step back into the Octagon in the UFC 202 main event Saturday at T-Mobile Arena, more than five months after their epic welterweight clash at UFC 196.
In March, Diaz famously stepped up on 11 days’ notice after a broken foot forced then-lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos out of his bout with McGregor, who was looking to become the first fighter to hold two UFC belts at the same time.
McGregor and Diaz agreed to fight at 170 pounds — 25 pounds greater than the division McGregor reigns. Despite being a heavy underdog, a bloodied Diaz weathered McGregor’s best in the first round and stunned the MMA world by forcing a second-round tapout due to a rear-naked choke.

LOS ANGELES >> By not showing up, Tre Mason made a huge impact on the Rams’ running-back battle in training camp.
If Mason had not been arrested in March, to start an apparently sad, complicated saga in his life, the Rams’ depth chart would have been fairly well set with Todd Gurley, Mason and Benny Cunningham. That’s a mix of speed and power that would have made it tough for anyone else to crack the rotation.
Instead, more than halfway through training camp, there’s intriguing flux, and heading into Saturday’s preseason game between the Rams and Kansas City Chiefs, there’s at least one job to be won.
“I want the best backs to be on the roster, no matter who that is,” Cunningham said this week. “You just try to come out and compete and set the bar for the next guy. Hopefully we can make each other better, with the competition being so strong.”

Venturing down memory lane to connect Rams’ past to Rams’ current, there’s a curious, colorful sidepath that leads to Paraquat Kelley.
Southe Califoia rock music fans from the 1970s and ‘80s grew up with the exuberant and iconic KMET radio personality – “Whoo-ya!” – who jokingly took his nickname from the toxic weed killer in the news 40 years ago because of how it was a health hazard to unwitting marijuana users (Kelley was not one).
But what’s really in a name? Kelley.
As in Bob Kelley, the Rams’ well-known play-by-play man from the moment the team arrived in Los Angeles in 1946 and the radio voice through the ‘50s and ‘60s on the old KMPC-AM 710 signal.
That’s Patrick “Paraquat” Kelley’s dad.
Pat was 16 when his father passed away in Sept., 1966, much too young at the age of 49. His chair was passed onto a very young Dick Enberg just days before th sport world...

The United States will play for another gold medal in men’s basketball, and they’ll be doing it thanks largely to Clippers center DeAndre Jordan.
On the surface, this seems like a remarkable sentence.
Jordan is the third best player on his team, he can’t make free throws and he’s not exactly a tactician with the ball in the post.
But Jordan’s performance Friday in Rio de Janeiro was another reminder that it’s what Jordan can do that matters – not what he can’t.
In a touament in which the U.S. has had to sweat out wins in the early rounds, they’ve handled two veteran teams in the medal rounds, beating Argentina in the quarterfinals before beating Pau Gasol, Ricky Rubio and Spain on Friday in the semifinals, 82-76.
For long stretches, Jordan looked like the best player on the court, soaring for put-back jams and patrolling the paint, swatting away shots and grabbing ev sport world...

ANAHEIM >> More than once this season, Angels catcher Geovany Soto told teammate Carlos Perez to relax. And more than once, the 25-year-old Perez would grip the bat tightly, resisting the advice of his 33-year-old mentor.
Perez ultimately leaed his lesson the hard way.
By the All-Star break, he had nearly as many strikeouts (35) as hits (38). His .204 batting average left the Angels little choice but to send him to Triple-A Salt Lake to clear his mind.
It worked. As soon as he arrived in Salt Lake, Perez said, “I just felt like you don’t have to have that kind of pressure. Just play. When I came back the first time, that’s what I did.”
